I like the E34 better than the E39.

It just says BMW to me more than the E39. It has the quad lights and boxy design of the E30, but bigger. Plus this was the last of the hand-built M cars. Which used an inline 6, as god intended.

I always gave the M5 a free pass in engine choice. For me an M3 has to be a N/A straight 6 (much as I like the e92). But a five series, do what you like. The E39 M5 is just so damn awesome I find it hard to pick between the two cars especially once you factor in the hand built sexy of the E34.

That said for the non M varieties the E34 has my heart. We have two, a 540i and a project car that is a manual 535i.

Have a straight piped e39 just because. =D

....then when the M20 with 416,000 miles finally died and the tow truck took it away :(

I genuinely don't understand the E39 love. It doesn't look good, just hopelessly dated without looking classic. The E39 M5 was a huge disappointment in my opinion. BMW is all about straight sixes; that's their quirk, their specialty, their signature. A V8 could be had in every car, ever. Sticking one in an M5 eliminated all that made the breed special, even if it was a particularly good engine.

lol yeah dude, that was a tank. The main bearing went out and with only $600 in my pocket, a motor job we just out of budget. I'll get another one some day :]
